What Is Automatic Writing, Really?

Some call it channeling. Others say it’s spirit-guided writing.
Whatever you name it, automatic writing is simply this:
You get out of the way, and Spirit comes through.

It’s not spooky or strange – it’s actually quite natural.
So many creatives do this without even realizing it.

  • Paul McCartney has said he felt guided when writing “Let It Be.”
  • Carole King? Channeled her music.
  • A Course in Miracles? Fully channeled by someone who identified as an atheist.
  • Stevie Nicks? Yep – spirit-led.

You don’t need to be a psychic or a poet to do this.
You just need to be open.

You’ve Probably Already Done It

When I first began automatic writing, I didn’t even know that’s what I was doing.
It just flowed.
And that’s the key: stop overthinking it.
When we get too serious or worried about “doing it right,” the ego takes over and blocks the channel.

How to Start Automatic Writing

Here’s the truth: it’s much simpler than we make it. Try this:

Step 1: Set the Space

  • Grab a notebook and pen (yes, pen – not a keyboard)
  • Light a candle if you’d like
  • Say a prayer or invocation – call in protection (Archangel Michael is my go-to)
  • Set the intention for clarity and connection with love and truth

Step 2: Ask

You can start with a simple question like:

Spirit, what do I need to know today?”
Or ask for guidance for a loved one, or even the world.

Then… start writing.

Step 3: Keep the Pen Moving

At first, it may feel like you. That’s okay.
But as you keep writing – without stopping – you may notice:

  • The language shifts (you’ll use words you normally wouldn’t)
  • The handwriting changes (different size, slant, spacing)
  • The tone feels softer, wiser, more loving

In my own writing, Spirit always uses the phrase “dear one.”
That’s not my language – it’s theirs.

Tips to Deepen Your Practice

  • Don’t worry about being perfect. Let go of “doing it right.”
  • If you pause and nothing comes – don’t stop your pen. Doodle. Scribble. Move.
    This keeps the energy flowing.
  • Try just 4–5 minutes to start. You don’t need to channel for an hour.
  • Trust what comes through. Even if it feels subtle.
  • Remember: you are Spirit, embodied. You’re not separate from the Spirit world – you’re in it.

Your Invitation to Connect

Automatic writing isn’t a special gift for a select few.
It’s a channel available to anyone who’s willing to listen.
Let the words flow through your pen, and you just might hear what your soul – or your angels – have been waiting to say.
